If you're about to embark on a project within your home or business and are thinking of using an interior designer, there are some important factors to think about.
Interior design takes time and planning, to ensure you can obtain the look you want and everything works and fits in your space.
“When I go and see a new client, I ask them lots of questions to make sure I understand what they want in terms of their ideal space and how much they want me to do .”
Gail Speck - Principle Designer, Studio Speck
1. Are you clear about what your project entails? Do you have a design brief?
Be clear about what the scope of your project entails. The designer will base everything on what you tell them and how clear you are about what you want. This forms the basis of the client brief and the designer will determine whether they are the best person for the job. It may also determine the person you eventually hire. Personalities also play an important part here too...do you think you can work with each other? Ultimately, clear, honest communication is key and the best projects are when the client and designer come up with solutions together. Make sure you understand the design and ask any questions.
2. Check out the designer
Go and visit the design studio and ask for examples of projects to determine whether they are a good fit for your project. Ask about what projects they usually do and see if you like the style they usually work on.
3. Determine the scope of what you want and need them to do?
How much help do you want from the designer? When do you want your project completed by. Are you just looking for a design scheme or do you want them to sort the whole project for you? How much can the designer do for you and are you willing to let them. make a list of all the things you need help with and you and the designer can go through this to determine what is best for your project.
4. Does the designer work in your location?
Most designers work on multiple properties all over the country and sometimes even abroad. Most designers will have contacts in different areas to cover this, so using a designer further away will not necessarily mean higher costs.
5. What do their clients say?
Are there any reviews you can read to help with your decision? Look at linked in profiles and read any testimonials. If the reviews are good, you're very likely to have a good experience.
6. When do you need your project finished?
Be realistic. A good designer will help you if you are unsure as to what is possible. They will be experienced in how long each item will take and can advise you and manage your expectations.
7. Understand the costs and the design
Make sure you are happy and have asked lots of questions. If you have an absolute budget, make sure you explain everything to your designer. Communication is key to ensure there are no misunderstandings and no surprise costs. If you are unsure of anything don't be afraid to speak up.
Throw away any preconceptions and find the best person for you and your project. It's a fun and exciting journey and at the end of it, you'll have a brand new space to enjoy!
